Jonathan Wright Esq.
My Dear Cousin,
Since I had last this pleasure in reply to your esteemed letter of March 31 1836 I have not had the gratification of receiving a line from you, but I suppose as I did not execute your request agreeably to my promise, that you determined to write me no more, but I have to say in excuse for my delay that, probably without any exaggeration I may state the past twelve months to be in truth the most disagreeable and troublesome that I have ever passed, what with Political Commercial & Agricultural difficulties. I may almost say that I have not had a day of satisfaction, we are however over the worst, although we have suffered severely in Commerce by failures in London alone by the houses of Thomas Wilson & Co. & George Wilde & Co. we had to amount
002
of near £20.000 Stg of our drafts protested they were however principally taken up by Messrs Baring & Brothers & Co. for our honor, and we have fairly weathered the storm.
I now enclose you under cover statement of a Box of Spars and Minerals which I have had selected for you, the Box itself is of our Cuba Mahogany and cut on this Estate and I really hope that both that, and its contents will be found pleasing and satisfactory to you, I send it down to town with instructions to avail of best mode for its safe conveyance to Liverpool, directed to the care of Messrs James Perrin & Sons of that City for Nehemiah Wright Esq. of Christ Church Place Dublin.
I shall expect to hear from you of its receipt & beg you to believe
me truly yr affectionate Cousin
Santiago J. Wright

P.S. You must not let the shortness of my letters induce you to believe, that I am not interested in all that regards family & country, but really I am not in spirits to write more at large yr. SJW
