My Dear Cousin,
Your very gratifying letter of 15th of 4 mo last past was duly to hand some time ago, and ought to have had an earlier reply but really my various, occupations were so pressing that I believe that this is the first time that I have taken up the pen to reply to foreign letters since its receipt. I do not forget Jonathan Hill's School, nor my relations nor playmates of my days of boyhood, how could I? impressions at that period of life are generally in delible even to the latest stages of life. It would require more time than my leisure admits to enter into a detail of the "Natural History of Manners and trade of this Island" for such information my dear Cousin I must refer you to Books.
As it relates to Glass Wares I have to observe that we do not possess any manufactories thereof and that we are principally supplied from England & occasionally from France, the United States & Germany.
002
It would not be profitable to import glass from Ireland because we have no vessels direct from thence, and the article could only form a small constituent of a general cargo order to be lucrative.
Although my name stands first in a large Commercial Establishment it is now near ten years since I have been personally engaged in Commerce being a sleeping partner only. I am altogether devoted to Agriculture say Coffee and reside 30 miles from town on the Estate from which I date the present entirely surrounded by negroes who I believe are happy and content. I am sorry to observe that the Peasantry of our native country are not as satisfied as our slaves here, who are well lodged, clothed and fed with their wives and children around them and address their masters with more freedom and confidence than the Poor do the Rich in Ireland.
At all times gratified by letters from you or any of my relations. Believe me to remain yr. Affect. Cousin
