Dear Aunt
I received a few days since your very acceptable letter of 11mo 10th and have perused its contents with much interest, and was gratified to learn that mine from New York was satisfactory to you, my locks are not merely intermingled with grey, they are scanty and almost white and be the truth known to you I shave and wear a wig, so you see I am without reprieve on the last of Old Bachelors. I have thought that it would be more pleasing to Aunt Rachel under the circumstances of this case to address her direct which I have done and place the letter under cover for your perusal please to have it sealed, and handed to her, and I know no use in your letting her know that you are aware of the contents, you will observe what I request of her and I will thank you to say a little more or less what may be necessary to reimburse the Society for advances made to her? and what annual sum would put her at her ease for the time to come? as it is

possible that she may not reply categorically to me on either of these queries. I mean to say that if she do reply that she may reduce the amount below the reality or perhaps not reply at all. Father and all the family are at their ease and Uncle William does not want for any thing, the former suffers by Rheumatism as I am sorry to see that you do likewise, I believe that complaint runs in the family for I have felt a twinge occasionally myself and suppose that I shall have my share in a few years more, if God spares my life, the latter occasionally but not often, takes [much to spirits] but he has pledged himself most solemnly to me that it shall never again occur. You must not measure your letter by mine for it is but fair for you to recollect that I have really more employment than one can do, and do well. I am sometimes attending to my duties at 3 O Clock in the Morning and last Night at 12 O Clock I was on my return home from our Meadow Grounds whence I had been called by an express advising fire, but no harm was done

It is needless for me to repeat that nothing would afford me more pleasure than revisiting the natal soil, but really I found things so very much out of order here, from my 4 Mos absence in the United States that I should be continually on thorns thinking that affairs in Cuba were most probably suffering, however it is yet possible that I may gather myself together and pop up on you some of these days, John is dead and I grieve not for him he made a scandalous marriage and became an habitual drunkard or at least much given to drink, I thank my God that notwithstanding that I have gone through many trials and for years I had a mind I may say continually destroyed, that I stuck to water and tea as my constant drinks, if you keep up the correspondence I shall be punctual in my reply.
