My Dear Aunt
I received a few days since enclosed under cover of letter from Aunt Martha the few lines with which you favoured me on or about 11Mo last past for it was not dated and I beg you to rest assured that laconic as was the communication, that it gladdened my heart. It is right and proper the remark that my reason for remitting the £50 Stg for your use, through the medium of another originated in my not knowing whether you yet lived or where, now it's certain that you may justly charge me with neglect, and although I cannot pretend to offer a full excuse, nevertheless were you aware of the magnitude and complication of the Commercial affairs in which I have been involved and for many years not knowing how the struggle would result, whether I should sink or swim you would admit it in palliation especially as I had not a suspicion that you were in want of any benefit in my power to render, under this state of things I now address you direct as I
002
take it for granted that it will be more acceptable to you, and certainly more agreeable to me, and in fine more just and equitable, that when unavoidable
circumstances have rendered aid necessary for you, that such aid should be given by a nephew whose infancy and boyhood was watched & tended by you to say the least with motherly care rather than by other person or persons whatsoever, now taking these premises as incontrovertable, I have to request of you a statement of all that you have ever received from the Society in order that I may take measures to place you in a situation to refund the amount in as much as you have no real occasion for it and I am both willing and able to make it good and that it may when in the hands of the Society again be disbursed for pious purposes where actual necessity may require it. I will also thank you to state to me fully and frankly what annual sum will be sufficient for placing you at your ease for the time to come and it shall be my pleasing duty to see that you are therewith supplied.
003
I continue to enjoy though the blessings of God I may almost say uninterrupted health and I Hope I may say that I am truly thankful for his manifold favors. I have the pleasure to say that Father & all branches of the family in Ohio State are doing well and not in want of any thing. I direct this under cover to Aunt Martha to be delivered to you but if you wish to point out any particular channel through which you are desirous that either letter or means shall reach you, please to point it out and I shall conform myself to your wishes.
I shall anxiously await a reply to the present and shall continue my correspondence with you with much satisfaction in case you will be thereby gratified
Ever & truly your Obliged Grateful
& Affectionate
Nephew
