002
After many long years of continual turmoil and anxiety and unremitted perseverance, I at last feel myself getting clear of many of my troubles, and obtained what may be reasonably considered a competence as to fortune; and I have just returned from a visit to my father and relatives in Ohio; who are now all in the way of becoming comfortable – I reside in the Island of Cuba as a Merchant and Coffee Planter, but it is in the latter branch that [I] specially employ myself, I am a Catholic from conviction and an old Bachelor from necessity, and bear I believe an unblemished reputation, in writing of myself thus particularly the latter I do so for your satisfaction, and not from egotism.
I was extremely sorry to learn in Ohio that my Aunt Rachel to whom I owe so much, more than I can ever repay, has long since lost her property, and had I known it sooner, aid on my part would not have been withheld, and I now remit you under cover a draft for £50 Stg say Fifty Pounds Sterling, for

her use, trusting in God, that I may yet however late, be in time to render her some service, and I remit to you as the most capable of presenting it in the mode that may be most gratifying to her, and I have to say that I shall be at all times willing and sincerely pleased to forward from time to time any sum or sums that can be useful to her, please to let me know exactly how things are, and I shall not be found wanting in my duty and love, you will oblige me by directing for me as follows

not in friend's style for that being uncommon in this quarter of the world, I have reason to believe that I have lost many family letters therefrom that were opened and destroyed out of curiosity to read contents under what to those so satisfy, thought a queer address - I write you not a long letter but beg that you will not copy my example therein as when at home and not hurried I shall be as voluminous as you wish, but in
004
writing a long letter please not to cross your lines but employ more paper as my sight is bad and I am a poor deciphering such. I now pledge myself never to let a letter of yours remain unanswered, in fact that is a point in which for many years, I have used the greatest punctuality with every one.
I leave this City for home in about three weeks for being a farmer I must be on the ground when practicable during crops, and that will have commenced before I can get there let me do all I can. I believe that I am liked by all my labourers so much so that I take it for granted I should be sincerely lamented in case of my death, and however many may think, although I be amongst Spaniards, we have more security for life and property than you have in Ireland and although this is a free and rapidly improving Country admired by almost everyone, nevertheless I by far prefer the tranquility of my own home in Cuba to it.
I now conclude hoping to hear from you as soon after the receipt of this as at all practicable and remain
Your affectionate nephew
James J. Wright
