Title
A Stone Monument featuring the Royal Coat of Arms
Depiction
The picture shows a stone monument with the Royal Coat of Arms between a lion and a unicorn
Description
The large stone monument features the Royal Coat of Arms, on each side of which is a lion and a unicorn. It was originally located on the pediment of the Galway Couthouse, but was relocated to the rear of the Quadrangle in UCG during the Irish War of Independence for safekeeping, in fear of it being damaged or destroyed by the Irish Republican Army. It can be regarded as a symbol of the University's foundation by Royal Charter in 1845 by Queen Victoria, as one of the three Queen's Colleges in Irealand.
