Brian

Brian Leonard was born in 1936. In 1973, Brian was appointed Chair of Pharmacology at University College Galway where he remained for 25 years until his retirement in 1999. Brian passed away on 27 Dec. 2023.

Brian Leonard obtained a BSc and PhD in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1959 and 1962 respectively. This was followed by a Lectureship in Pharmacology at the University of Nottingham, UK from 1962 to 1968 and subsequent positions in the pharmaceutical industry; first with ICI Ltd in Alderley Park until 1971 and then in 1974 when he became Head of Neurochemistry at Organon Laboratories in the Netherlands (Cryan, 2024). In 1973, Brian was appointed Chair of Pharmacology at University College Galway (now University of Galway) where he remained for 25 years until his retirement in 1999. His area of research centred on psychopharmacology. Among his several distinctive professional activities, he was President of the British Association for Psychopharmacology from 1986–1988 and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Human Psychopharmacology (1995-2000).
