Title

Máirín de Valéra's Botany students on a fieldwork outing in a bog, 1940s

Depiction

Eleven women walking through heathery land

Description

Eleven female Botany students , two of them nuns, on a fieldwork outing in a bog, with a bank of turf in the distance. Two of them are holding a flower, probably bogcotton. The location is most likely a bog in Connemara. The photograph was probably taken by Máirín de Valéra herself, as she is not readily identifiable therein.
Botany at that time was predominantly a subject pursued by women, as indeed evidenced in the photograph. Clerical students, both male and female, constituted a prominent element of the student body of UCG up to and including the early 1960s.
