Bio-note
Dr Michael B. Lawless was born in Fermoy in 1909, and undertook his studies in UCG, where he obtained an MSC in 1931. He was awarded a National University of Ireland Travelling Studentship in Mathematics in 1931. He then took a postgraduate course in Cambridge (1931-32). In 1933 he entered the Civil Service as a Junior Administrative Officer assigned to the Department of Local Government. In 1940 he became Assistant Principal, and in 1946 Principal. In July 1966 he succeeded Mr John Garvin, another UCG graduate, as Secretary of the Department of Local Government. Other positions he held in the course of his distinguished career were Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, and for the Referendum, and Chairman of the National Building Agency.
