Thomas Dinan, M.Sc., was appointed Professor of Natural History at University College Galway in 1927. He was Acting President of the College in 1959 and he retired in 1960 (University Calendar).

Biography

Thomas John Dinan, the eldest son of Thomas Dinan, RIC Constable and Bridget Cormick was born in Loughrea on 27 September 1900. The 1911 Census shows him as living in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe and his profession is given as a primary school teacher. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Science and was appointed Professor of Natural History at University College Galway in 1927. He married Mary J. (Nina) Carlos in St. Andrew’s Church, Dublin on 17 December 1942. They had no children, but they travelled extensively together, and had a particular fondness for rural Spain. He was Acting President of the University in 1959 in place of President Pádraig de Brún, who had retired on health grounds. Prof. Thomas Dinan retired in 1960. He died on 12 May 1966 and is buried in Galway.
