Description

An official photograph of the members of the Governing Body of UCG in office for the period 1 February 1980 - 31 January 1983, together with the two senior members of administrative staff who serviced it. Missing from the photograph are Most Rev. Dr Eamonn Casey (Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh; nominated by the Minister of Education), Professor Timothy J. Casey (elected by the NUI Senate), Professor Seán M. Lavelle (elected by Academic Council), Mícheál Ó hUiginn (elected by Galway Corporation), and the President of the Students' Union / Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, nominated by the Minister of Education). As the precise date of the photograph is unknown, it is unclear whether that person was Cathal Guiomard (in office till 1 July 1980) or his successor, Brendan 'Speedie' Smith (in office till 1 July 1981), or the latter's successor, Aileen O'Meara (in office till 1 July 1982). As her successor, Séamus Henry (in office till 1 July 1983), appears in the photograph, taken in June 1983, of the 1983-86 Governing Body / Coiste Rialaithe, he is very unlikely to have been the student member at the time of this photograph.

People

(Front row) An tOllamh Déaglán Ó Caoimh (Registrar/Meabhránaí; elected by Academic Council), Patrick Briody (elected by Leitrim Co. Council), Séamus Scott (elected by Roscommon Co. Imbusch (elected by Academic Council), Professor Kieran Dunican (coopted), Michael D. Higgins (elected by Galway Co. John Coote Duggan (Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry; nominated by the Minister of Education). (Middle row) An tOllamh Eustás Ó Héideáin (elected by the Graduates), Dr Hubert McDermott (coopted), Professor James N. Flavin (elected by Academic Council), Cathal Mac Gabhann (elected by the NUI Senate), Christopher Townley (elected by the Graduates). (Back row) Seán McEvoy (elected by Mayo Co. ('Bobby') Curran (elected by the Graduates), Séamus Ó Cathail (Rúnaí Acadúil / Academic Secretary), Dioraí Ó Coirbhin (Rúnaí-Sparánaí / Secretary-Bursar).
Note: Since 1971 the nominees of the Minister of Education had included the current President of the Students' Union / Comhaltas na Mac Léinn, a one-year position filled annually by election. Consequently, for the remainder of the period of office of this Governing Body, Cathal Guiomard (in office till 1 July 1980) was succeeded as a member of the Governing Body by Brendan 'Speedie' Smith (in office till July 1981), who was in turn succeeded by Aileen O'Meara (in office till July 1982) and by Séamus Henry (in office till July 1983).
