The picture shows the President, Eamon de Valera, Chancellor of the National University of Ireland (NUI) alongside Prof. Thomas J. Dinan (Acting President of UCG) left of picture and Prof. James Mitchell, Registrar and Secretary of UCG. The second row shows Séamus Wilmot, NUI Registrar (to the left) and Colonel Sean Brennan, Aide-de-Camp to the President. The Chancellor of the NUI had come to UCG to confer Degrees and Diplomas on the 5th of September 1959.
Thomas John Dinan, MSc was appointed Professor of Natural History in 1927. He married Mary Josephine (Nina) Carlos on 17 Dec. 1942 in St. Andrew’s Church, Dublin. Her bridesmaid was Bridget Byrne (likely Ciss Byrne). Thomas Dinan was Acting President of UCG following Rt. Revd Monsignor de Brún’s retirement in 1959. Thomas Dinan retired in 1960.
