Description
Michael B. Lawless, MSc, Secretary of the Department of Local Government from 1966 to 1974 was awarded an LLD by the National University of Ireland in 1974. Séamus Mac Mathúna records that 'His family, as I seem to recall, lived in or had some connection with the big yellow house on campus which had to be demolished to make way for the Arts/Science complex – maybe just across from where the Bank of Ireland office is. [...] He was Secretary of the Department of Local Government from 1966 to 1974, so the degree was obviously timed to reflect also his retirement from that position - and indeed the opening of the Arts/Science complex in 1974 (if my memory of his connection to that house is accurate) would have added to the pleasant coincidence.'
Michael V. Duignan (1907- 1988), seen here on the right, held the Chair of Celtic Archaeology in UCG from 1945 to his retirement in 1977. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1965-70) and Registrar (1970-74) and also served on the Senate of the National University of Ireland.
