Thomas Fanning (1933-1993) came to UCG in 1979 to take up a post as Statutory Lecturer. He had previously been an Assistant Inspector in the Office of Public Works, where, in 1975, he was promoted to Senior Archaeologist. He directed the Archaeological Survey of Ireland until his move to Galway four years later. Highly regarded as a medieval archaeologist with a special interest in the Viking presence in Ireland, he was early known for his work on ringed pins. He conducted a numerous excavations on a broad range of site types, both before and after his move into academia. Very shortly before his untimely death, he was promoted to Associate Professor in Galway. In his last publication he returned to the subject of Viking ringed pins, in a work published posthumously by the Royal Irish Academy (1994).
