Act 1:
Lady Hurf and Lord Edgard are staying at Vichy with their two very rich nieces. So also are Peterbono, Hector, and Gustave, three Pickpockets, would-be confidence tricksters. The three thieves meet in various disguises. Good news! After a bad day’s picking, Hector and Gustave have met Eva and Juliette, the rich nieces.
They meet Lady Hurf disguised as Spanish Grandees are greeted by her as long-lost friends, the Duc de Miraflor y Grandes and his son. She invites them to stay at her villa, along with Dupont-Dufort, senior and junior, two bankers.

Act 2:
While Juliette and Gustave are suffering the pains of love, Hector is not making much progress with Eva. He can’t remember what disguise he was wearing, when he saw her first, Lord Edgard, suspicious of the three, has sent for a detective. He thinks Hector is a detective. — Later, as the three thieves relax in comfort, Gustave’s conscience pricks him and he wants to leave. Peterbono and Hector don’t agree.
— Lord Edgard has found the death-notice of the Duc of Miraflor but loses it. Juliette suspects Gustave but still loves him.

Act 3: Everyone is going to a Thieves Ball. Juliette and Gustave stay behind.

Act 4: We couldn’t spoil the surprise ending.
