Michael Duignan with Michael B. Lawless at the latter's Honorary Conferring, 7 October 1974 Michael B. Lawless, MSc, Secretary of the Department of Local Government from 1966 to 1974 was awarded an LLD by the National University of Ireland in 1974. Séamus Mac Mathúna records that 'His family, as I seem to recall, lived in or had some connection with the big yellow house on campus which had to be demolished to make way for the Arts/Science complex – maybe just across from where the Bank of Ireland office is. [...] He was Secretary of the Department of Local Government from 1966 to 1974, so the degree was obviously timed to reflect also his retirement from that position - and indeed the opening of the Arts/Science complex in 1974 (if my memory of his connection to that house is accurate) would have added to the pleasant coincidence.'
Michael V. Duignan (1907- 1988), seen here on the right, held the Chair of Celtic Archaeology in UCG from 1945 to his retirement in 1977. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1965-70) and Registrar (1970-74) and also served on the Senate of the National University of Ireland.

UCG Governing Body, 1980-83 An official photograph of the members of the Governing Body of UCG in office for the period 1 February 1980 - 31 January 1983, together with the two senior members of administrative staff who serviced it. Missing from the photograph are Most Rev. Dr Eamonn Casey (Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh; nominated by the Minister of Education), Professor Timothy J. Casey (elected by the NUI Senate), Professor Seán M. Lavelle (elected by Academic Council), Mícheál Ó hUiginn (elected by Galway Corporation), and the President of the Students' Union / Uachtarán Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, nominated by the Minister of Education). As the precise date of the photograph is unknown, it is unclear whether that person was Cathal Guiomard (in office till 1 July 1980) or his successor, Brendan 'Speedie' Smith (in office till 1 July 1981), or the latter's successor, Aileen O'Meara (in office till 1 July 1982). As her successor, Séamus Henry (in office till 1 July 1983), appears in the photograph, taken in June 1983, of the 1983-86 Governing Body / Coiste Rialaithe, he is very unlikely to have been the student member at the time of this photograph.
